Multicultural literature features works written by African American, Asian American, Native American, and Latino authors as they intersect with issues of race, gender, class, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, and nationality. Students will read, discuss, and analyze multicultural literature to expand and deepen their experiences with diverse voices and perspectives. This will increase students' understanding of traditions and values of varied cultures necessary for living and working effectively in a society with great population diversity. Recognize lecture organizational patterns, themes and topics.

This course explores the portrayal of gender roles (experience and perspectives), gender identity, and sexual identity/orientation in context of historical, social, and cultural structures and values in literature. Students will read, discuss, and analyze literature to expand and deepen their experiences with issues related to gender. Students will apply critical thinking skills to the gender-based study of literature.
